Arab world celebrates Prophet Mohammad’s birth
STORY: From Stambali music and dance in Tunisia, El Tanoura dance in Egypt, lighting candles in Iraq, to a marching band in Jerusalem, the occasion was marked with different traditions. In Baghdad, Iraq, university student Mariam Bassem told Reuters she was happy to be able to celebrate the Prophet’s birthday again at the Abu Hanifah mosque, after not being able to for two years due to the coronavirus pandemic.Prophet Mohammad was born in Mecca, Saudi Arabia in the year 570 AD. Muslims around the world celebrate Mawlid, or his birth, each year on the 12th day of Rabi’ al-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic calendar.The day is a public holiday in several Muslim-majority countries, including many part of the Middle East, Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Bangladesh.
