Passengers on two Metropolitan Atlanta Fast Transit Authority (MARTA) railcars look slightly totally different lately. After routinely traversing town for years, the retired vessels launched into a brand new journey to advertise sustainability and home marine wildlife. 

Georgia’s Division of Pure Assets teamed up with MARTA for the mission, growing a plan to repurpose the decommissioned railcars in an environmentally accountable means. After guaranteeing the commuter automobiles had been freed from dangerous supplies corresponding to wires, oil, and grease, they had been transported to Georgia’s shoreline and launched into Synthetic Reel L, which is already residence to a number of different defunct constructions selling marine life, corresponding to tugboats, barges, and battle tanks.

Since their deployment in December of final 12 months, a range or barnacles, corals, and sponges have already begun to ascertain themselves onto the railcar. As marine biologist Cameron Brinton explains, the reef will “become more and more productive as time goes on.”
