CAIRO (AP) — At least 14 people were killed in a road collision involving a minibus and a truck in southern Egypt on Tuesday, health authorities said.

In a statement, the Egyptian authorities said the minibus and pickup truck collided near the remote oasis village of Abu Minqar in the southwestern province of El-Wadi El-Gedid.

Mahmoud Abu El-Laly, the province’s head of security, said the 14 bodies were taken to a mortuary in the nearby town of Dakhla and that nine of the victims have been identified. The statement gave no further details.

According to several Egyptian news outlets, the crash took place Tuesday evening.

Traffic accidents claim thousands of lives every year in the North African country, with crashes and collisions mostly caused by speeding, bad roads or poorly enforced traffic laws.

Last week, a bus fell into a canal in Egypt’s northern Nile River Delta region, killing at least 21 people.

In July, a bus slammed into a parked trailer truck on a highway in the southern province of Minya, killing 23 people.
