“Why did Putin choose now to invade Ukraine,” has become a popular question on news shows this week.
Sen. Ted Cruz, Republican from Texas, in a Feb. 24 interview on FOX News, said it boiled down to Putin recognizing how weak-willed Joe Biden and Democrats are. I think Cruz is pointing at the wrong president and party.
Donald Trump, during his four years as president praised and demurred to Putin. This week, Trump has continued to express his admiration for Putin’s leadership. Putin knows that Trump continues to lead the Republican Party and that many Republican voters accept whatever Trump says as gospel.
He knows Trump likes to manufacture history and guesses that Trump will support Putin’s fictional account of Ukraine’s history. However, seeing that President Trump’s core support has recently shown signs of slipping, Putin may have figured that he should take action now while he still has Trump fawning over him and 30 to 35 percent of Trump’s followers moving in lockstep with him.
