Nested in one in all Hiné Mizushima’s wood dioramas is an historical marine menagerie. Vibrant blue felt strains the partitions of the plush setting, which homes a pair of ammonites together with tall seagrass and small bits of coral reef.
From her Vancouver studio, Mizushima stitches whimsical renditions of underwater creatures. Her gentle, fiber sculptures take a playful strategy to pure life, typically perching an octopus atop a human coronary heart or discovering a moray eel slithering out of an artery. Usually depicted in pastel colours and adorned with beads and crocheted particulars, the creatures are pleasant and even glitzy interpretations of their real-life counterparts.
The works proven right here shall be on view in Mizushima’s solo present Creatures and Curiosities on view from September 14 to October 22 at Boris Zakkaten in Tokyo. Discover extra on Instagram.
