“A central ingredient is empty space,” says Mika Obayashi about her gossamer installations of paper and twine. The artist constructs delicate, but immersive works that dangle from the ceiling in exact squares or triangles, their strings hovering simply above the ground. Exact and natural, the installations query the connection between materials and area and “can be looked at, in, and through all at once.”
Her works evoke Lenore Tawney’s famend Cloud collection, atmospheric sculptures of innumerable knotted threads. Obayashi is equally meditative, with initiatives like “Gospel of Three Dimensions” layering hand-made paper dyed with indigo right into a placing gradient. A central cavern permits the viewer to step inside, enveloping them in an ethereal cascade of blue hues.
