In 1933, Alfonso Bialetti and his son Renato started to market an aluminum contraption for brewing espresso that may make an indelible mark on Italian culinary tradition and past. Known as a moka pot after the Yemeni metropolis of Mokha, the equipment remains to be manufactured at present by the espresso tools firm Bialetti beneath the identify Moka Specific, offering a steam-powered, filterless approach to make a wealthy brew on the stovetop.
For Venice, California-based artist Kenny Harris, the metallic, faceted floor of the long-lasting maker conjures up an ongoing collection of pretty still-life oil work. Exploring coloration and type, the artist focuses on reflections and their results. Delicate gradients and patterns are mirrored throughout the pot’s floor, generally blurring the boundary between the article and its environment.
“I find delight in searching for harmonies, lost edges, and texture variation,” the artist says. “In the end, these are color experimentations in the tradition of Joseph Albers or Albert Moore: reiteration of the same forms with different color combinations. Also, I love coffee.”
A solo present of Harris’s work titled Passage opens on September 6 at Galerie Mokum in Amsterdam, and he’s at present working towards one other present in early 2026 at Billis Williams Gallery in Los Angeles. Discover extra work on the artist’s web site and Instagram.
