Evoking the meandering veins in leaves, the clustered divots of termite holes, or pocked coral, Katie Rose Johnston’s ceramic sculptures meld natural kind with perform.

The Glasgow-based artist (beforehand) works as M A N I F E S T O, shaping wall-based cabinets she refers to as Curiosity Clouds. Designed to carry collections like their Sixteenth-century counterparts often called wunderkammers, the earthenware items comprise small pockets completely formed to suit pinecones, seashells, and craggy hunks of stone.

Johnston not too long ago returned to Scotland after a residency at Shiro Oni Studios in Japan the place she participated within the four-day communal ritual of firing an Anagama kiln. As wooden burns within the chamber, ash clings to the ceramics inside and provides a shiny end, an unpredictable consequence the artist plans to include into her follow.  “I’ve started to develop an ash glaze, which will invite a little of this chance into these new forms,” she tells Colossal. “The wood ash was very kindly given by a local Glasgow-based pizza restaurant, so I’m excited to also have the opportunity to divert a waste material from landfill, giving it a new life.”

Along with this technical growth, the residency impressed a sequence of wood-fired serving dishes and platters, which Johnston plans to proceed within the coming months. All of her sculptures and items promote out extremely shortly, however if you happen to hold a watch out for store updates on her Instagram, you may have the ability to snag one.
