Dancing With the Stars transformed into a drag show, Tuesday, when Shangela transformed into Jenny from the Block. The drag queen performed a Cha Cha with her partner, Gleb Savchenko, to Jennifer Lopez’s hit song “Waiting for Tonight”.
Prior to her performance, Shangela said, “I hope the spirit of Jennifer Lopez falls upon me. Takes over my body. Makes me feel like I’m at the Super Bowl but I’m in the Ballroom.”
Shangela got her wish, as she put on a performance that blew the judges away. Especially Carrie Ann Inaba, who was a former In Living Color Fly Girl dancer alongside Lopez.
“Listen, I am welcoming you into the official Fly Girl club,” Inaba told Shangela. “You’re an official Fly Girl now. You hit accents like there is no tomorrow. It is so powerful.”
Even though Shangela had yet to record a single nine from the judges this season, she more than made up for it with three of them. But her Cha Cha was about more than a score, as she was glad she exposed the audience to her drag art form.
“See that was drag,” Shangela said. “It’s a ballroom, but that’s also drag. And that was a great representation for everyone of the drag queens that I have learned from and look up to. And tonight, drag was on Dancing With the Stars.”
Dancing With the Stars streams Mondays at 8 p.m. on Disney+.
