Charles Gaines Maps the Meanings of Historical Baobab Bushes in Meticulous Charts

For the reason that Nineteen Seventies, Charles Gaines (beforehand) has been charting the sprawling, unpredictable types of bushes onto numbered grids. He started with walnut bushes in 1975, which he photographed whereas barren after which plotted onto hand-drawn graph paper.

In his ongoing Numbers and Bushes sequence, Gaines continues to chart variations. Throughout a 2023 go to to Tanzania, the artist photographed majestic baobabs, which type the premise for a group of triptychs that entwine the magnificent specimens with colorfully numbered grids. Gnarled trunks and spindly offshoots each layer atop and are masked by Gaines’ sequences, all seen via sheets of Plexiglass.

The baobab is named “the tree of life” for its longevity, myriad roles in preserving the savanna ecosystem, and skill to host complete habitats inside its canopies. The specimens are sometimes related to folklore and fable and within the period of local weather catastrophe, are among the casualties of unrelenting drought. Relying on location, epoch, and neighborhood, the bushes can serve a wide selection of functions and maintain a large number of symbolism.

Icons of the African continent, baobabs additionally connect with histories of colonialism and slavery. On this context, they’re distorted and mediated by each Gaines’ organizing ideas and the acrylic panes. “What you bring to the image, adds to the image,” the artist says.
