The German phrase heimat roughly interprets to the online of concepts and emotions related to dwelling and the land we occupy. Throughout a flight throughout the Rocky Mountains and Cascade Vary in 2021, the idea was entrance and middle for artist Leslie Wayne as she peered down by the small airplane window on the huge expanses under.
Raised within the American West and based mostly in Manhattan since 1982, Wayne is considering how dwelling, terrain, and reminiscence inform each other. She elaborates:
My very own expertise of [heimat] has all the time been tied to the dry, scrubby hills of Santa Barbara and Laguna, the place I honed my expertise as a younger plein-air panorama painter intent on commentary and constancy. Solely once I moved East in my late 20s did my relationship to that panorama start to shift into one thing a lot deeper and extra complicated.
This explicit flight sparked questions on settlement and the nefarious roots of Manifest Future, and the artist started snapping pictures of the patchworked fields, arid ridges, and mountains under. These pictures turned the idea for a compelling sequence of 36 small oil work on paper framed by a rendition of a Boeing 737 window.
Her first observational compositions in about 20 years, the works comprise a sequence titled This Land is Your Land, which references the long-lasting Woody Guthrie music criticizing the notion of land possession. Framed by a completely fashionable invention, the tiny, but grand scenes are timeless of their magnificence, reflecting on the imprints of our lives and the legacies we go away behind. “I moved from fidelity to the photographs to an approximation of my experience through the artifice of the work…replicating that sense of wonder and awe that only a view from above can give us— a moment of transcendence beyond the cacophony of our everyday lives,” she provides.
This Land is Your Land is on view as a part of Wayne’s solo present by August 2 at Jack Shainman Gallery in New York. Discover extra from the artist on her web site.
