Yoshiyuki Katayama captures the ineffable qualities of nature and time in her ongoing sequence Umwelt (beforehand), which traces myriad relationships between bugs and flowering vegetation. The title takes its identify from an ethological idea that makes use of the German phrase “umwelt,” normally translated to “self-centered world,” to explain how animals expertise their environment. By elegant timelapses of unfurling blossoms, Katayama composes portraits of hostas and gerberas inhabited by colourful six-and eight-legged creatures that, because of some nice modifying, transfer in actual time.
