Evoking marigolds, prairie clover, and milk thistle, Ross Hansen’s ongoing collection of ethereal lights dissect assumptions about design and performance. The Los Angeles-based artist and designer’s distinctive sculptural kinds mix hemp, bio-resin, and aluminum to create otherworldly ground lamps.
Hansen attracts on a background in panorama design, impressed by natural textures and kinds present in nature. In his current exhibition Of Human Emotions at Quantity Gallery, clusters of lights resemble larger-than-life fungi or microscopic organisms. Strips of fabric are enrobed in plant-based resin for rigidity, and the illuminated bulbs diffuse inside the cloth.
