On candy-colored paper, Rhea Mack attracts a world by which all misfits are welcome. The Massachusetts-based artist lovingly renders curious characters with three heads, flowers rising from their palms, or a penchant for plump, strawberry hats.
Mack has a gentle spot for these unusual oddballs who develop organically, usually springing from her Sunday morning classes seemingly on their very own accord. “I usually start drawing, and they just kind of develop over a few hours. I sometimes have a certain feeling or pose in mind, but mostly I am just making it up as I go,” she says.
This intuitive, accommodating angle influences a lot of her course of, together with the choice to attract on pink paper merely “because it made sense,” she says. Mack chooses different supplies equally. “The colored pencil pinks I use in my drawings are very buttery and just feel nice to draw with,” she provides.
As if rising from a favourite fairytale—making a kids’s guide is on Mack’s thoughts—the drawings twist widespread crops and animals like canines and daisies into surreal fantasies. Every is full of small moments of intrigue and playful patterns like stripes and dots.
In a single work, for instance, a full human skeleton and dozens of single eyes float from a determine’s gaze, whereas a pink pup leaps overhead. One other incorporates a quintet sure by a rainbow costume, their bulbous, beige coifs fused collectively just like the clouds above.
Mack’s solo exhibition Massachusetts Dreaming opens subsequent week at Kyst Gallery in Dragor, Denmark, and is on view by Could 8. Discover prints in her store, and observe her work on Instagram. (by way of WePresent)
