Intimacy Facilities in Nia Winslow’s Nostalgic Paper Collages Highlighting Black Experiences

From torn items of paper, Nia Winslow constructs vibrant scenes that evoke togetherness and nostalgia, typically harkening again to the mid-Twentieth century. The Brooklyn-based artist taught herself to create mixed-media collages utilizing paper adhered to wooden panels, which draw on narratives, moods, and recollections.

Winslow predominantly focuses on the African diaspora, tracing tales of the lives of Black people in America. By collages made with quite a lot of textures, cuttings, and clippings, she illuminates younger folks enjoying outside, sitting with their mother and father, and spending time with each other.

The artist enjoys combining her ardour for type with storytelling. She attracts inspiration from artists like Romare Bearden, Kerry James Marshall, Religion Ringgold, and Jacob Lawrence, typically portraying Black figures throughout on a regular basis actions and in casual, leisurely settings.

“Mundane or complex, each piece is created to capture the essence of life through the lens of someone who experiences it,” she says in a press release. Vehicles, city structure, clothes, and hairstyles emerge in vivid, intimate portraits of group, assist, and self-love.
