Bluebirds are sometimes related to happiness, love, hope, and positivity, making them an apt topic for New York-based artist Gigi Chen (beforehand), whose surreal work of wildlife merge the animal kingdom with symbols of house, consolation, and connection.
In her forthcoming solo exhibition A Collective Glow at Beinart Gallery in Melbourne, Chen continues to discover emotional ties between animals and the setting. In “A Sparrow’s Song,” a hen’s physique radiates with neon pink hearts, whereas in “A Collective Glow,” half a dozen home sparrows sew up a gleaming cavity in a pigeon’s breast.
Chen’s latest collection considers the connection between nature and mythology together with autobiographical narratives of the complexities of household, security, love, and a way of belonging. Her works incorporate otherworldly, dream-like imagery that attracts on childhood associations with motion pictures and tv that includes magical animals. “The paintings prominently feature creatures—usually birds—acting as conduits for Chen and her own stories,” says a gallery assertion.
A Collective Glow runs from June 23 to July 17. Discover extra on Chen’s web site and Instagram.
