A herd of elephants has arrived in Newport, Rhode Island, on the primary leg of their 3,500-mile journey throughout the U.S. Collectively organized by two nonprofits, Elephant Household and CoExistence, the monumental public work attracts consideration to the relationships between folks and wildlife, notably because the human inhabitants grows and encroaches on pure habitats.
“The Great Elephant Migration” options 100 life-sized animal sculptures crafted by the CoExistence Collective, a company of 200 Indigenous artisans from the Bettakurumba, Paniya, Kattunayakan, and Soliga communities. Standing as much as 15 ft tall and weighing almost 800 kilos, every is made with the invasive Lantana camara weed, which has disrupted the native biodiversity of about 40 p.c of India’s protected areas. Most of the artisans reside alongside the creatures in India’s Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, and their work is each an homage to the magnificent animals and a name to motion to guard their environments.
The mission launched in 2021 within the U.Ok. with wild success, and now in Newport, the herd will roam alongside the Cliff Stroll on the Atlantic shoreline till September.
