From a younger age, artist and educator Jiyong Lee (beforehand) was fascinated with organic processes. He grew up paging by means of medical illustration books, amazed by cells and the way life begins with the proliferation of only one. Lee’s ongoing Segmentation collection is an ode to cell division and the obscurities of life science that may solely be seen with a microscope.
Based mostly in Carbondale, Illinois—the place he’s an affiliate professor and head of the glass program at Southern Illinois College—Lee creates segmented types with strong glass. Relatively than working with scorching strategies similar to blowing or casting, the artist makes use of coldworking strategies as he cuts and reassembles thick parts of the fabric with coloured adhesive in a laminating course of.
Ending the floor with grinding and sprucing, {a partially} translucent exterior each obscures and divulges components of what lies inside every fragile construction. Evoking compositions just like embryonic configurations, Lee explains, “I think how life starts with a cell is amazing. A cell divides millions of times, and each part of the cell and embryo knows exactly what they are supposed to become in the body. With the material and techniques that I use, I create a sculptural glass object that has biomorphic or geometric forms that have complex internal structures inside”
The artist is working towards an exhibition at Duane Reed Gallery in St. Louis from September 6 by means of October 12, and his newer items are on view at Traver Gallery in Seattle. Comply with Lee on Instagram and see his web site for extra.
